Kung asked: "Is there any one word that could guide a person throughout life?"

The Master replied: "How about 'shu' [reciprocity]: never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself?"

子 貢 問 曰 、有 一 言、而 可 以 終 身 行 之 者 乎 。

子 曰、 其 恕 乎 、己所 不 欲、勿 施 於 人。

At fifteen, I had the will to learn; 十 五 向學

at thirty, I could stand; 三 十 而 立

at forty, I had no doubts; 四十 而 不 惑

at fifty, I understood the heavenly Bidding; 五 十 而 知 天 命

at sixty, my ears were opened; 六 十 而 耳 順

at seventy, I could do as my heart lusted without trespassing from the square.

七 十 而 從 心 欲，不 踰 矩 .
